The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has announced that HRM Oba (Barr.) Sir Stephen Babatunde Adegboyega Alabi, a revered traditional ruler and former President of the association, will be conferred with the prestigious SWAN National Diamond Jubilee Award (SWAN Merit Award) as part of the activities marking its 60th anniversary celebration.
In a statement released by the SWAN National Secretariat, the association described Oba Alabi’s leadership and lifelong service as instrumental to the growth and development of sports journalism in Nigeria. His tenure as SWAN President, it said, laid the foundation for unity, professionalism, and the elevation of sports writing to national relevance.
“As we commemorate 60 years of SWAN’s existence, it is both timely and appropriate to honour one of our own, whose vision, sacrifice, and dedication have left an indelible mark on our association and the sports media landscape in Nigeria,” the statement read.
Oba Stephen Alabi, who is also a respected legal practitioner and traditional ruler, was lauded for his pioneering role in repositioning the association, fostering camaraderie among sports journalists, and advocating for the welfare and recognition of members nationwide.
The conferment of the award will take place on Friday, October 31, 2025, during the SWAN @ 60 celebration at the VIP Lounge, Package A, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The SWAN National Diamond Jubilee Award is the highest honour bestowed by the association to individuals whose contributions have significantly shaped the progress of sports journalism in Nigeria.
Oba Alabi’s recognition adds to the long list of accolades he has received over the years for his service to the legal, traditional, and media communities. His enduring legacy continues to inspire generations of sports writers across the country.
